Botanical facial steams are an old favourite amongst lovers of natural skincare, providing a gentle method to nourish the surface of the skin with natural goodness, while the warmth of the steam softens congested pores and stimulates circulation. Facial steams can be used as a standalone cleanse, but they are also an ideal way to prepare the skin before applying a mask or hydration treatment.
The beauty of botanical steams is how simple they are to make. Any combinations can be easily customised to include your favourite skin safe flowers or essential oils to complement your skin type. If you don’t have any fresh or dried lavender flower at hand, try adding in 1-2 drops of Pure Bridestowe Lavender Oil to the water.
We love to use the following calming blend, which is easy to source and suitable for most skin types:
Mix together equal parts lavender buds (you can use the buds from our tea or culinary lavender), calendula, rose petals and chamomile buds. The soothing properties of lavender, chamomile and calendula have a calming, cleansing influence on the skin while the relaxing aromas of lavender and rose help to melt away stress.
To use:
Place a small handful of the mixture in a ceramic or glass bowl and cover with boiling water. Lean over the bowl and drape a towel over your head to keep the steam close to your skin for at least five minutes, and no more than ten.
We recommend using culinary-grade dry ingredients which can be found in most natural food stores or local markets, and can be mixed in large batches to store in an airtight jar in a cool dry place. As with any skincare treatments, it’s best to consult your doctor before using on sensitive skin or any serious conditions.
Thankyou!
